Diane is going to a shopping mall to buy some food items.

Diane is  going to buy a flat.

In the above sentences the expression going to conveys different meaning. The first one denotes physical movement of Diane , the second one indicates the intention/certainty of Diane (there is no physical movement). ‘going to’  doesn't   express futurity, it is not a pure future too, it modifies the future with intention or certainty.

She  is going to have a baby

I am going to have a cup of coffee.

Subject:   The person or thing that we speak about in a sentence is called subject.A subject can be a noun, pronoun, common noun, collective noun adjectives etc.

Am/is/are:      Helping verbs that denote existence/non existence of  someone/something in the present (time)

Was/were: Helping verbs that denote existence/non existence  of someone/something in the past.

Yes/no question: The question for which the response would be either ‘yes’ or ‘no’

‘Wh’ word/question: The questions that start with ‘wh’ words what/when/why/where/how etc. The response to this question will be a complete one.

Verb: (Present form): In the verb forms  ‘go/went/gone’  go is the present form of the verb.

Pattern of five important types of  spoken sentences.

1. Simple sentence (message /information/news etc.)

subject +am/ is/are + going to + verb (present form) + information .

She is going to write a letter.


2.Negative sentence

Subject + am/is/are + not + going to + verb (present form) + information.

She is not (isn't) going to write a letter

3. Yes/no  question

Am/is/are + subject + going to Verb (present form) + information

Is  she going to write letter?

4.Yes/no  negative question

Am/is/are +not + going to + verb (Present form) + information

Is  she not going to write a letter?/isn’t she going to write a letter?

5. ‘Wh’ question

‘Wh’ word + am/is/are + subject + going to + verb (present form)

What/where/how   is  she going to write?

Each of the above five types of spoken sentences can be uttered in eight of more moods of utterance.

Julia is going to go to California. ( Julia is physically going to California.)

Are they going to start new business? Yes they are going to start  next week.

Joe and Mary are going to marry next Sunday.

Is she going to buy a new flat ? yes she is.

What are you going to do this evening? I am not sure

Are you going to come now ?

We are going to celebrate the new year next week.

Short dialogues

A: I am going to buy furniture tomorrow. B: Where from? A: At Jacob’s.

A: Loot at the sky.  It’s  going to rain soon. B: Oh God I should fly now.

A: Diane is going to buy a new car? B:When, A: Next week.

A: What are you going to wear to the party tomorrow? B: I have not idea right now.

A: There is good film on TV tonight. Are you going to watch……? B:I am not sure.

Difference: going to and going to be

It’s going to rain.

It’s going to be cloudy.(doesn’t contain verb of action)

She is going to write an examination.

She is going to be a student again . 

He is going to handle a difficult task.

It’s going to be a difficult task for him.

‘going to’ as a future indicator

What are you going to do this evening?

When is she going to finish this task?

When are you going to get your degree?

When are we going to have another party?

Are you going to visit anybody on Sunday?

What are we going to have for dinner?

Where are you going to spend your long holidays? At Los angles
