ENGLISH SKILL - 16


                                 used to usage
                                                                     
Terms used 
(be= am ,is,are, was, were, will/shall + be etc.)
Present form of the verb and ing verb
In the verb forms ( go, went, gone, going etc.)
 Go is present form of the verb and going (go + ing) is the ing form of the verb, it is also called progressive form
Words in parenthesis or slants are not part of the structure, these words are necessary to make a complete sense.
                                                                                                                          

Used to is used when we want to talk about past habits and states. Used to is not used for the present habit or a state. There is no use to  (Present) form.   We use present simple tense, to talk about present habits  ( Present tense - please visit session 14)
e.g.
I used to smoke, when I was a student (habit) – This means now I stopped smoking
He used to be lazy, When he was a child (state = condition) – This means now he is active


A-  Pattern of sentence – Habit
1.I/we/you/they/he/she/it + used to + present form of the verb + information – Simple sentence
She  used to like chocolates (when she was young)

2.I/we/you/they/he/she/it + didn’t + use to + present form of the verb + information – negative sentence
She didn’t use to like chocolate (when she was young).

3.Did +  I/we/you/they/he/she/it + use to + present form of the verb + information – ‘yes/no’ question
Did she use to like chocolate (When she was young)?  did she used to..?

4.Didn’t +I/we/you/they/he/she/it + use to + present form of the verb + information – ‘yes/no’ negative question.
Didn’t she use to like chocolate …………? (Didn’t she used to..?)

5.‘Wh’ word + did I/we/you they/ he/she/it – ‘wh’ word question
What did she use to like  (When she was young)? (What did she used to liked…?)

NOTE: He/she/it include all nouns, pronouns, common nouns, proper nouns, collective nouns, noun phrases etc. In type 3 the words in parenthesis usually come before the subject (I/we/you/they/he/she/it).In informal talk it’s OK  if you place them at the end. All the five types can be uttered in eight or more moods of utterance.

More sentences
Clara didn’t use to like chocolates (Now she does)  OR Clara used to not like chocolates.
Joe used to play indoor games at college.
Where did she use to live before. (before her arrival to the present palce)
She used to visit here daily. (before she got a job)
When She was a student, she never used to eat meat.
When I was in college, I used to watch TV every morning.
What places did you use to visit when you were young? Mostly historical.
My boss used to think, that I was unfriendly , now he changed his thought.
(I started watching TV news recently) .  I didn’t use to like it before./I never used to like  it  before.
Jim used to  talk a lot, these days.( he used to be silent  in the past).
Did she use to eat oily food, when she was young.
She didn’t use to like him at college. (Now she likes him)
Jack used to watch TV a lot, when I was with him.
Mary used to live alone last year, now she lives with his aunt.
Jim used to visit his parents at the weekend, when he was in London.
Julia used to drive to work every day. (but these days she usually goes by bus)
Joe lives alone. (he is used to it)


B  Pattern of sentence – state
 Jim used to be a worker .  (Now he is the supervisor of a section.)
This old building used to be a cinema. (Now the building is used as a post office)
There used to be a palace here, before the great flood. (After flood, it disappeared)
/Now the life is not so easy/, as it used to be. (sometime back)
She always used to be afraid of cats. (Now she is not afraid)


C  Pattern of sentences Be + used to  ( am, is and are)
I am used to the language in this country - Simple sentence
I am not used to the language of this country. - Negative sentence
Am I used to .........? (Not common) - 'Yes/no'  Question
Aren't I used to .......?(Not common) -  'Yes/no'  negative question

NOTE: With the subject we , you,they  am is replaced by are
With the subject he ,she,it, am is replaced by is 


D  Pattern  of sentences  Be + used to + (was and were)
 I/he/she/it was used to the accent  (I/he/she/it spend five years in Sydney). - Simple sentence.
I/he/she/it wasn't used to the accent. ( At the beginning) - Negative sentence.
Was I/he/she/it  used to the accent ? (Not common) - 'Yes/no' sentence.
Wasn't I/he/she/it used to the accent? (not Common) - 'Yes/no' negative sentence.
NOTE: With we,you,they,  was is replaced by were

E  Be+used to + ing verb form
 She is used to teaching now ( She felt, it was difficult at the beginning.)
Maria is  used to driving  in New York now. (She was afraid at the beginning.)
Rachel is used to working with old and poor people. ( She was reluctant at the beginning.)
Joe is used to  driving on the left ( It is not a difficult job  for him now.)
Shane is not used to getting up early these days  ( May be she is not well these days.)

Difference between used to live  and   be + used to living 
She used to live alone  (At present  she is not living alone)
She is used to living alone ( she is accustomed to living along, she is comfortable with lonliness )

Get + used to + ing verb
( She was in Perth for five years) she never got used to talking with strange people. - Past reference.
If you join a local social club, you will soon get used to living in any foreign country - Future reference

 Became + used to
Gradually the new ambassador became used to the new country.
Slowly she became used to the new job

Always +used to
She always used to be afraid of cats. (Now she is not afraid of cats)
He always used to be late. (Now  he is punctual)

Be + used to + noun
I am used to his shouts. ( I put up with  his shouts)
She wasn’t used to  this place ( The place is new for here)
(When he joined the  college, he couldn’t understand anything), he wasn’t used to a foreign language.

Used to  + have
Jennet used to have a piano (She sold it few days ago)
Joe used to have  lunch with us (When he was in NY)
Have you got a bike? No, I used to have one before, I gave it to my friend.
