ENGLISH SKILL - 7


                                  one, ones, its, it's, that

                                           
'One'  is used (for singular)    'ones' is used  (for Plural)
Sentence patterns in parenthesis have not ye been discussed   in angrazy.com, they are given to balance the sentences.
A: Which car is yours ? This one or that one B: That one
A: (Which hotel did you stay at?) B: The one opposite the college.
A: ( I don’t like the pink shirt), but (I like the brown one.)
A: This plate is dirty,( can I have a clean one?)
A: That pen is  very nice, (I’m going to buy one for me.)
A: Which books are yours? B: The ones on the table.
A: (Don’t buy those oranges, buy these ones.)
A: These chairs are dirty, (can we have clean ones?)
A: Is there a chemist near here? B: There is one at the end of this street.
A: (Can you lend me your pen? B: I’m sorry  I haven’t got one.)
A: (I want today’s newspaper), this one is an old one .
A: That is a nice house. B: Which one?. A: The one with the red paint
      
usage of   It
‘it ‘ is a dummy subject, it issed to introduce a complex subject , which would become funny,  if made a real subject,We also use ‘it’ for weather/time/distance/day etc., (For subject explanation please visit grammar page)

Pattern
It + is (present)       It + was (past)      It + will be (future)
Five important types of spoken Sentence 
It’s  Joe’s book. (Simple sentence)
It’s not Joe’s book. (Negative sentence)
Is it Joe’s book? ('yes/no' question)
Is it not Joe's book?/Isn’t it Joe's  book? ('yes/no' negative question)
Whose book is it? ('wh' question)
All the five types of above sentences u can be uttered in eight or more moods of utterance

Other uses
Day and time
1.  It’s 10 O’ clock. (O' refers to 'of'the' )
2.  What time is it?
3.  It’s late, hurry up.
4.  What day is it ? Thursday? No it’s Friday.
5.  It’s 5 October (not 5th)

Weather
It's a nice day today
It's dark/cold/fine/windy/foggy/sunny

distance
It's a long way from here to the airport.
It's 70 kilometers from here to the capital city.
How far is it from Perth to Moscow?

It + infinitive  (infinitive = to + verb like write/see/talk etc.)
It's not easy to locate Julia in the auditorium.
It' s important to understand the note.
It' s nice to see you again.
It's is important to reserve the seat in advance.
It was good of you to phone Joe.
I  find it difficult to talk  to Jim. ('to' Preceding Jim is a preposition)

Emphasis
It was I, who started this. (me may be used instead of in spoken form)
It was my uncle, who took part in the competition.
It was Joe, who first started the argument.

More sentences
1. It isn’t far, we can go by bicycle.
2. It’s hot/salty/sweet etc.
3. It’s summer here.
4. It’s lunch time now.
5. Was the exam difficult? Not it was easy.
6. I attended a party last night. How was It  ? It was nice.
7. Oh, it’s my bus, bye bye, see you tomorrow.
8. My God it’s 11 O’ clock, I must leave now.
9. It’s costly/cheap.
10. That hotel is nice, but it's far away.
11. It’s 9.30 now, it’s time to sleep/pray.
12. Chinese  food is nice, I like it very much.
13. Where is it? /When is it?/ How is it?
14. It will be a busy day tomorrow.
15. It will be a nice party tomorrow.
16. Is it  t rue that she is not coming today?
17. It's raining again (This is a standard expression)
18. It's raining hard. (This is a standard expression)
19. It will be an easy task for him tomorrow.
20. It will be nice a party tomorrow.
Transform the above sentences into the five important spoken forms and try to utter in eight moods of utterance.

‘It’ and ‘there’ difference ('there' will be discussed in next session)
It’s very salty dish. /There is more salt in the dish.
It (train) was very crowded./ There was a  crowd in the train.
It rains a lot in winter /there is lot of rain in winter

 Difference between           'its' and 'it's'
'Itsis possessive (e.g  Its tail is long -dog's tail/Its key is missing - shelve's key/Its main door is locked - house's main door
it's = it is 
                                                        That usage
Non native speakers often get confused with the usage of 'that'.,' That' is a connecting word and has little real meaning. (Please note that I am not talking 'this/that' which we saw some time back).

'that' as a connecting world
Diane said. She is joining a new bank ('that' is introduced to link the two sentences to make it more formal)
Diane said that she is joining a new bank (In  spoken form we may omit 'that')

That-caluse
(Clause is a group of words 'that clause' is a group of words containing 'that')
I know that ,she is a genius.
I hope that, you will have a wonderful time.
It's important that, you meet boss immediately.

Omission of 'that'
'That' is generally omitted in spoken  sentences particularly after common verbs ,but it can't be omitted after verbs like 'shout', 'replied','informed'  etc.
Sally said that she was feeling good ('that'  may be omitted)
Jim informed that he is not coming to  the party ('that' can't be omitted)

'that' after adjectives
I'm happy that you are here (In spoken form 'that'  is optional)
It's funny that he is late  (In spoken form 'that' is optional)
